System 7.5.3 & 7.5.5 are the fastest ones available for your machine. But
everyone on this list will say you should use at least 8.1 and preferably 8.6.
So make a backup of what you have now, because after the slowdown
you experience with these more advanced operating systems (especially
after several weeks of use when the hard drive becomes fragmented) you
may wish you had 7.5.3/7.5.5 again.
The same principles apply to web browsers. Everyone will say you need
the lastest and greatest, but they won't say a thing about the speed penalty.
I install two web browers on my low end powermacs (which is what a 2300 is)
Netscape 2.02 and 4.08. I run 2.02 for most surfing because it's the fastest
browser available. For complicated web sites that would crash 2.02
or websites that require a browser with valid security certificates, I use 4.08.
I use the email clients built into 2.02 and 4.08 because it simplifies matters.
Virually everyone else on this list uses a separate, more sophisticated and
complicated email client like Claris Emailer or Eudora Pro.
As you see it gets down to a matter of taste...whether having the latest,
most sophisticated and complicated software is the most appealing or
whether having optimal speed and simplicity is desired.
