For what you have I would say 7.6.1 at the very least or 8.1 which usues
more ram but is very stable, forget 8.5 and 8.6 if you only have 48 meg as
soon as you open a few programs you will run out of memory fast and have to
depend on Virtual memory to make up the difference.  That will in turn make
your system less stable.
Most of the newer programs are designed for 7.6 and up.
