I wholeheartedly agree on not running the latest and greatest on older
hardware. I, however, am one of those who mentions that 8.6 on a 2300 with
56MB RAM isn't necessarily a bad thing. I use it on my 2300 and it runs
fine. Mind you, this is not my main system, and I am generally not surfing
the web or doing anything terribly memory intensive, so YMMV. However, my
230 has 7.1 and that is as high as I care to go. I still recommend 8.1 for
2300 users due to the increased PowerPC native code in the finder. If
someone has some reference which disproves this theory, let me know. So,
basically, I wanted to say that it isn't necessarily faster to run 7.5.5 on
a 2300, especially if you can pare down 8.1.
