This sounds like a challenge.
I know how much space there is; I guess it depends on
the thickness and compressability of the foam. One
could try "pre-flattening" with a rubber mallet. There
are other forms of double-sided adhesive that are
quite thin but I'd be concerned about the loss of
adhesion with exposure over time.
I've seen very thin flat-headed drive mounting screws.
I have this picture in my head of some strips cut out
of very thin--almost foil--sheet metal or flexible
acetate-like plastic that you could screw into the new
mounting holes, then bend around the original mounting
brackets.
Of course, you'd have to have suitable stuff lying
around or you'll end up spending more than new
brackets cost.
