That's what I am using! Drive's gone on the 2300, Running Fdisk on my Sony
now! (In an Adapter) Then I'll format it! Of course after I do a surface
scan!

Spend money, hook up adapter, install in desktop PC (because it may still be
an issue of the Mac OS not "seeing" it), fuss with master slave issue...
or
Borrow laptop, install drive, format, keep money.
I would go for the easiest, cheapest route first. But that's me.
