Didn't notice that description before (about seeming to spin very slowly).
When you're trying to spin it up, give the machine a good sharp whack! You
could have a stiction problem. Since you're going to take the loss on the
drive anyway, you've got nothing more to lose. Well, OK, just don't hit
things hard enough to unseat something else. Probably just holding the
machine with the palmrests hanging off your desk, with one hand resting on
the palmrest over the HD, then a sharp rap with the knuckles (like you're
knocking on somebody's door fairly hard) from under the HD.
