Last time: fdisk does the same thing as Drive Setup: it creates a
boot block and partition table. Drive Setup also goes on to populate
those partitions with an on-disk driver (which is a Mac-specific
concept) and filesystem(s).
If you want a low-level disk partition editor like fdisk, grab a copy
of the Mac port of Linux pdisk. All the nitty-gritty, plus it creates
Mac partitions instead of DOS ones.

True, but there are utilities that will probe the ATA bus as well as
the SCSI bus. One of them is built into (surprise) Drive Setup, in
the form of the initial scan it does when you run it or switch it to
the foreground. I've zeroed (and manually clobbered) many a boot
block and partition table, and I've never noted it to cause Drive
Setup any serious difficulties. If you still think editing the
*contents* of disk blocks will prevent it from working, you don't yet
understand what it does.
