There is an incompatibility between the OS 8.5 Energy Saver control
panel and the Duo's internal modem support. The control panel will
always put the modem software in the "compatible" mode, where it
displaces (and becomes) the modem serial port. The fix is to get rid
of the Energy Saver panel and use the nearly equivalent Powerbook
control panel from 8.1 (and then set the mode radio button back to
"normal" one last time).
