Disable QuickTime translation in the QuickTime settings control panel 
and restart.

As for setting the preference for your preferred jpg viewer, it 
depends on your scenario. It will surely involve messing with 
Netscape application preferences if we are talking about downloaded 
jpgs. Otherwise you should change the creator for every file by hand 
using a program like FileBuddy, there are plenty that do the job.
