Why not to get a 10/100 ethernet card:
1. If all your are using it for is connecting it to you DSL or cabler
modem 100 is overkill.
2. Unless your 2400 has a G3 upgrade, you won't see a significant
boost in speed.
3. Unless your 2400 has CardBus and the ethernet card is too, you
won't see any boost in speed.
Why to get a 10/100 card:
1. If you are pluged into a switched hub that provides full duplex mode.
2. If you have a CardBus ready 2400 with a G3 upgrade and you
ruteinly move 100mb or lager files across a switch network to another
machine that can keep up.
3. You have to plug into a 100 only unswitched hub (very very rare)
I have tested both a 10 and 10/100 card on my CardBus 2400. Because I
didn't have a G3 processor that could keep up with the data rate of
100, I didn't see that much of a increase in speed.
I did like the full duplex mode, and that helped with over
resomsiveness in heave two way communications that was light in data
(X windowing, ssh and telnet) but it was barley noticeable.
For me, $100 for a 10/100 card was better invested in a AirPort
compatable card, or somthing else. I was able to pick up a FireWire,
AirPort and Road Rocket video card for $100 off ebay, that thoes are
much more useful that any tiny gain in speed I would have seen from a
10/100 ethernet card.
I personally use a Megahertz XJAEM3336 Ethernet/Modem combo card.
Very cheap on eBay and I have had very few problem with the card.
Heck, I have two of them, one in my carry bag and one always at my
desk at home.
