Lam: The first is our common mystery, and I also suspect IE but only when
online.  I also use IE offline, and never have the freezes.

Your second problem may be associated with the sleep mode.  IE 5.0
documentation acknowledges a bug when it comes to sleep mode.  Their
suggested work-around (really a cop-out) is to quit IE either just before or
just after sleep, and then reopen it.  My solution -- as others have
suggested: If I'm on AC, I no longer go into sleep mode.  If I have to step
away, I'll spin down the HD, and darken the screen/turn-off the external
display.
