Do you know if the batteries are good?

It sounds like they are so far gone that when you boot up, the power manger
inside the Duo is overworked. It's job is to provide power to the Duo so
that it can run. It also has to provide power to the battery to charge it.
If the battery is to far gone it puts such a load on the power manager that
there isn't enough juice left for the Duo itself to continue powering up.
Hence it goes dark.

Try removing the battery as Suzy had suggested and see what happens.
Hopefully you will be able to boot without any trouble. If you insert a
battery after you finish booting up and it dies, it's definitely a bad
battery. Don't continue trying to use it as it will only put undue stress on
the power manager.
