Any thin plastic sheet will do. Cut a piece of PE/PP/PET from a flat bottle.

You can, but it's not necessary. A pressure fit will do. The size of the
aluminum pad can be as small as 1" x 1"--it's more important that contact is
made between the HD and the bottom case.

Right--that is a more important modification. Cooler = longer life.

If you prefer--it's really no big deal. The job is as simple or as
complicated as one wants to make it. For me essential functionality is
sufficient.
