While there are actually lots of good reasons to never buy from
Iomega (such as "all their products are crap"), I'm not sure they can
really be blamed for this. The real culprit is probably Apple for
creating the DB-25 desktop SCSI connector in the first place (which
also stretched the SCSI standard pretty thin and contributed much to
the flakiness of Mac SCSI and its voodoo reputation). Even so, you
can take solace that you're far from the only person who spits when
they hear the name Iomega. ;)
Sorry to hear about your computer though. :( As for getting the data
off the drive, you can either put it in another model Powerbook with
onboard IDE (possibly booting from an external device) or put it in
one of those cases with a PCMCIA interface (Datashuttle or
equivalent). If neither of those are available, it's also possible to
install it in a PC notebook running Linux and get the data off, but
you'll probably find it a fair amount of work.
