I also have a 2300c with 56mb RAM, and have recently tried several versions
of the OS to see which is speedier. I timed startup with a stopwatch, and
that's the only benchmark I have with facts and figures. I also just paid
attention as I rooted around in the Finder, opening and closing windows,
deleting, copying, etc. Here's what I found:
OS 7.6.1- startup was a little quicker, but not significantly enough to lose
the features of OS 8 for me.
8.1- runs nicely
8.6- starts up virtually the same as 8.1. It runs beautifully on the 2300,
and is more stable for me than even 8.1. It actually cleared up one
software compatibility issue. Then, of course, there's Sherlock, and I
wouldn't want to be without it.
9.0.4- it runs ok, very stable, but SLOW. DON'T bother with OS 9.
When I started testing, I really expected to find that OS 8.0 or 8.1 would
be my answer. I was pleasantly surprised to find that 8.6 was just as
quick. For me, it was clearly the winner.
As for your video board... I don't know about that, since I don't have one.
