Because of the way Linux works, all of the distributions use one "kernel" that functions like the System Folder in the MacOS. You can retrograde a newer kernel onto an older distro with no problems. There are kernels that support NuBus PowerMacs, but AFAIK none that support most of the Duo-specific hardware.
Technically, you can run a mkLinux kernel in place of a LinuxPPC kernel in the same OSes; however, I believe you are in the same boat for Duo support on that end also. Have you used Linux before? Because I don't believe that you will want to give up the MacOS for it. You might try picking up an early Pentium system and trying it out there. That will give you a good idea if Linux is for you. If it is, you might consider selling your 2300 and buying an x86 laptop, or a newer Mac laptop. Because it's doubtful that the Duo will ever have any more support in Linux; it's likely that newer kernel versions will someday no longer support the Duo in any fashion; sometimes when they upgrade things in the kernel, it breaks other things. If there is little demand for Duo support, it is far less likely that it will be fixed. As time goes on, the demand for Linux to run on Duos _will decrease_. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
