IIRC, it isn't the size of the files that matters.  The problem lay, rather,
in the very act of mounting the volume if the size of the volume was greater
than 4 GB (I *think* that's the right number).  That is, if you had had your
disk divided into two partitions, I think you could have successfully
mounted either without risking this damage.

That said, I have to issue the disclaimer that I've never actually had a
machine/OS combo where this was a potential problem, so my recollection is
quite rusty -- limited to what I remember reading back when this was an
actual issue.

I'd bet the details are rattling about the archives on MacFixIt.
