When I was adminning the Mac lab at my high school my senior year (which,
incidently, was what got me turned on to Macs. You can read the story on LEM
in the "My First Mac" stories), the teachers and I resorted to all kinds of
tricks and chicanery to keep the things running. To the point of "borrowing"
parts from PC labs to replace broken things on the Macs (primarily hard
drives, though we discovered one lab had PCs that had compatible memory)
because the school administration wouldn't hesitate to spend exorbitant
amounts of money fixing old PCs, but wouldn't spend a buck to get a common
IDE HD for the poor PowerMacs. By the end of the school year, my school's
lab was the only one that still had all its Macs running at 100%, every
other school had about half the lab down. Since then, I've travelled around
to a few other schools (most notably, my sister's) and helped them with
theirs. It's amazing how surprised their IT folks are when I show them just
how easy it is to work on the Macs compared to the PCs. I remember shocking
one that was assigned to "watch" me (probably to make sure I didn't try to
steal any parts, or 'put a virus on them') when I just pulled the
motherboard out of it's sliding case, swapped the memory, stuck it back in,
and hit the power.

Ahh, if only Apple had hired decent marketting people...
