The best way is to first install 7.6 on another HD partition (strongly
recommended to partition HDs) to preserve you current (unbroken) operating
state. Then update to 7.6.1 (de rigueur). I believe I posted success on
running Newer Xts w/761 a week or two ago. Alternatively, follow Apple's
instructions for a "clean install". If your HD capacity is constrained,
physically pull the extensions you need to preserve into another folder. But
Apple's installer usually preserves (installed over renamed) system folders.

Early adopters of the 2400 got System 7.6.1 on CD. I never got OS 8 with a
2400.
