I have always used a Farallon Skyline card (after
briefly trying on Orinoco WaveLAN and returning it
because of its awful drivers) and a rev 1 (grey) Apple
Base Station. Works great. Never bothered with
TomeViewer or the Apple software; what the Skyline
comes with works fine (unless you need to use the
Software Base Station function of the Apple software).
And of course you can still use the Apple Airport
Admin software.

If I were going to do it again I would probably save
money and buy one of the oh-so-cheap
Linksys/D-Link/Siemens/SMC wireless routers you see
for $100 on DealMac all the time -- in fact, in my
current setup the Airport Base Station is in bridge
mode, meaning it's acting as little more than a dumb
access point to my Linksys (non-wireless) router. I
prefer the Linksys for the routing because (like
nearly all non-Apple routers) it is browser-based,
meaning I can configure it from any computer I have
handy without needing the Airport software; I can also
configure it remotely over the net. It is also more
configurable when it comes to advanced features like
port forwarding, etc.

However, I am told that only the SMC (and the Apple)
permits wireless AppleTalk, for what that is worth,
and possibly some Lucent/Orinoco/Agere/whatever may be
as well. I really don't need wireless AppleTalk very
often; AppleShare-over-IP works fine when I need it. I
think it would only really be an issue if you had an
AppleTalk printer you wanted to print to wirelessly.
