I went online with the Duo using an external US Robotics 56K modem and the
MiniDock. My only choice for a driver on the Control Panel list was "US
Robotics universal". It was painfully s-l-o-w. I downloaded Netscape
Communicator 4.8 (in only 3 hours) but I haven't installed it yet. Should
I?
It's up to you. If it has enough memory, I've found Netscape to be a bit faster on my 2300c. Then again, the latest IE5 also works and it tends to render fancy pages better and with less memory.. it's a tradeoff. Historically I've been a fan of Netscape/Mozilla but sometimes it's hard to avoid IE on a Mac.

I have some idea that I would like the Duo to resemble the 6100 (i.e. OS 8.6
or better is required to use Remote Access I think). Do I really want to do
this? and if so, how?
I personally use 8.6 on my 2300c. Remote Access's predecessor was Open Transport/PPP which works fine all the way back to System 7.1. Don't let that be the deciding factor. 8.1 comes with it built in with a "PPP" control panel which is identical to Remote Access, just renamed. With the RAM it has, a slimmed down 8.6 would probably work fine. No real reason to run Mac OS 9 I think. There are some features of 8.6 like Speakable Items that are fun with a Duo because of the built in microphone. I also happen to like the Platinum Sounds even though it slows it down a bit. I like audio feedback :)
