Sure you can! Try iCab. Ought to be very fast, is standards compliant, 
can masquerade as any of the others, and runs on much less memory. 

I once tried one of those external USR 56K modems and frankly prefer the 
Diamond Supra for speed. My USR was very slow too. I think that's because 
it's based on X2 technology, a dead end. (I'm sure someone will correct 
me if I'm wrong about this).

As for NC4.8, you can slim it down considerably by trashing all the 
modules you're not gonna use before you start the install process. I find 
Mozilla 1.2b faster though, and those tabbed pages are handy.
