I guess my mileage does vary ;-) I have never connected at any speed
but 14.4 with my Global Village in my 280c.(see below)

I also do have a startup problem every time I switch from being in the
Duo Dock II to not being in the dock (but using the AC adapter) and to
not being in the dock (using battery power only). The problem is this,
whenever power up the first time aftermaking the switch... I get the
memory problem chimes (4 ascending followed by 4 descending tones). The
solution is simple, just press conrol-apple-power and she fires up and
works great until the next time it is put in or removed from the dock
as described above. I have never known if this is due to the modem
except it started when I installed the modem. I never tried removing
the modem to see if that would cure it, as it is not a problem, but
rather a minor nuisance.

My 14.4 as opposed to 19.2 connection speed might be due to the
following info I found on Kim Brennen's site:

Powerport Mercury - This was Global Village's own modem, a v.32terbo
modem capable of 19.2kbps. V.32terbo was a mildly supported propiatary
extension to the v.32bis protocol. Some v.34 modems (especially those
from USRobotics) support v.32terbo. If the remote modem doesn't support
v.32terbo the Mercury works like a v.32bis modem (aka 14.4kbps.)
