I have just done a little research and according to a source I consider
knowledgable and reliable, it appears that you are indeed correct Mark
and I am wrong about the "half a modem" issue with regard to the GV
modem.

A long time ago I had heard/read that the GV Powerport Mercury for the
duo worked the same as a stand-alone external modem and I just assumed
it to be true. I see now that it is not true. Therefore, I am guilty of
being a "parrot", i.e. not knowing what I was saying, but just
repeating it! Well, I think so far it is only my fifth mistake today so
I am still feeling pretty good :-)
