Right. I don't think I've ever actually seen a 19.2 (v.32ter) connection
with any of mine. You're even less likely to see it supported with the sort
of integrated access servers that are in use at most ISPs nowadays. I know
the Portmaster series doesn't support it (or I'd be using it right now ;).

Even if you did get a 19.2 connection, you'd be unlikely to notice the
difference.

But this is wrong. Both modems are "half a modem", as you put it. There is
no internal modem for the Duo that's implemented fully in hardware. This is
why neither model will work without the appropriate software installed,
unlike a "real" hardware modem which requires no driver.

I've used both, and found that the last release of the Express modem
software greatly outperforms the GV software on a 2300, probably because
the Express modem software contains some PPC code (the later releases were
2300-only). The GV modem & software tended to frequently and unpleasantly
bring the 2300 to its knees when put under any sort of load. However, on a
68k Duo the GV software performs just fine (not really any better or worse
than the earlier Express modem software). It was just never really updated
for the 2300, beyond the barest compatibility.

So for a 2300c, I'd explicitly recommend sticking with the Apple modem. For
a 280c or lower it's pretty much a wash (and so not worth switching if
you've already got one or the other). Some people do prefer the GV fax
software, if faxing is a big thing for you.
