I read somewhere that you can tell what year and week a Macintosh was 
manufactured by digits 3-5 of the serial number (for example 
TY7262P47ZQ was manufactured the 26th week of 1997).

If those of you who have had this problem could volunteer this 
information, we might have an idea of what the time frame is on the 
bad CPUs.
