I have had the same problem since going to 8.6 last November. I have
found that if I keep the Apple supplied modem extensions (PowerBook
3400/G3 Modem, PowerBook G3 Series Modem, and PowerBook Internal Modem)
active then I don't have to reset the Normal/Compatible switch in the GV
Control panel every time. I do find that when I switch from in the Dock
to nothing docked (two ports to one port) then I have to reset the
switch. If I fail to check this then I will have to restart to reset the
port. I use Location Manager to make sure that AppleTalk is set to
Ethernet (in the Dock) and "Remote Only" (everywhere else). That way it
doesn't interfere with the correct operation of the serial ports.
I hope that this helps

The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I got a Macintosh.
