You should check out eBay. Do a search for "Duo". This will give you an idea
of what things cost and how much you could get for your Duo. The reason
being is that for you there is no realistic way of upgrading the 230 without
swapping the logic board, and by the time you do this, you will have spent
as much as just buying a used 2300 or even a 280c. I say it's not realistic
for you assuming your limited college budget. I think you probably weren't
prepared for how expensive an upgrade might be. Also, because the upgrade
kits are hard to find, you are basically limited to: 1) finding a good
inexpensive logic board (equally as hard to come by) that you must install
yourself (to save money, otherwise it's quite expensive too); or 2) buying a
used machine. The plus to upgrading to a new machine is that you can finally
have color as well as a bigger hard drive and more memory!
If you can be happy running OS 8.1, I recommend the 280c because it runs
almost as fast as a 2300 and they cost less, but you loose out on any
PowerPC compatibility as far as software on your G3 is concerned and that
will also be added expense you don't need.
Check out eBay. You might be surprised at how much someone would pay for
your 230 (on an even tighter budget) to offset the cost of buying a 2300. I
don't suggest you buy a 2400 as you seem to already have the Duo accessories
and the 2400 would probably be way out of your price range. Oh, if your Duo
Dock is not a "Plus" or a "II", then you'll need to upgrade the lid (and I
would be happy to swap with you for cost of shipping).
Otherwise, buy Speed Doubler. That's about it.
