Actually I meant 8.5. But, I 'm surprised to hear that 8.5 isn't 100% PPC
native as Apple advertised ("like having a whole new computer for $100" they
said). Perhaps you would elaborate a little more. Regardless, I find 8.6 runs
quite zippily on my 2300. Definitely faster than 8.1, which was much slower
than 7.6.1. Although I doubt this affects Netscape one iota.
As far as Speed Doubler is concerned, I have not noticed any "real"
improvements. In fact, it slows startup to a virtual standstill as it loads. I
suspect that they will update for OS 9, but it is also probably the last
relevant OS that would require Speed Doubler in this age of blazing fast G4s.
The pre-G3's were arguably the last computers to really benefit from Speed
Doubler and OS 9 spells the end of the line for them. I truly can't imagine
trying to speed up my G3 or G4 under OS X. Anybody know if OS X will even
support 68k code emulation (which seems to be Speed Doubler's sole reason for
being)?
