Here's a partial answer/recommendation to your inquiry on upgrading your Duo
2300c:
RAM is not too difficult to install. Remove three Torx screws and flip up
the keyboard to expose the connector for the RAM module. Check ebay under
Duo - someone is always selling Duo RAM modules. I suggest you determine
long-term how much memory you need as there is only one RAM slot inside the
Duo.
CD-ROM drive: When CD-ROM drives were not part of the standard configuration
of a PowerBook, there were a few vendors of portable drives. Sony and
Panasonic were two such vendors that I recall, there were probably others. I
have a Sony drive that can also be used as an audio player (it's slightly
bigger than a DiscMan). It came with a SCSI cable that has a HDI-30
connector on one end and an unique connector on the other end for attaching
to the drive. The only problem is the drive has only one connector on it,
making it difficult to daisy-chain SCSI devices to the PowerBook. If you
only want to connect the CD-ROM drive to your Duo there's no problem.
