i'm wondering: are y'all trying to use serial connections because you
want to avoid the expense of the pc card modem? if money's not the
issue, i've used the 3com pc card modem 3cxm756. an optional cable is
required to hook it up to a nokia 6160 (other phones may work as well;
call 3com to find out, as the website doesn't have this info as i recall).
i think the card cost me $180, and the cable another $90. that's the
good part.
throughput never exceeded 9600 bps (9.6kbps). any email over a few k was
painfully slow to download, and browsing was a waste of time. in a
pinch, to get email where you can't get it any other way, it works. i
recall getting my email off aol using claris emailer while in a cab on
the midway in chicago, in bumper-to-bumper traffic. not a bad way to get
through rush hour...
the other good part: consistent dialup connections in various places in
the u.s. of 50kbps. gv 56k pp pro would show 28k - or worse - on the
same dialup, just moments apart.
go figure...
