I think there's significant value in using the same conventions that
independently developed on LJ, especially since many people will be
importing their tags. People are already bundling their tags like
that, and "how can I get my tags to display nested instead of flat"
is one of the most commonly asked customization questions on LJ;
people specifically choose layouts that have that code available for
them.

If we wanna completely revise tags down the road so that they're
easier to handle (tag booleans omg) I'd be all for it, but until
then, I think that officially adding something that people are
unofficially hacking into everything they can is a win for us...
