Just checked, italic is not possible, bold won't be a problem...
We can do without italics. The problem with vertical lines is as
Anthony said: are they to the left of the tag name? The right? Both?
What about bolded tag names for populated tags and [brackets] around
focused-client-tag names? It would mean rendering whitespace around
each tag name initially, though, in order to keep the tag list from
resizing every time focus changes.
