I am still learning about some of the quirks of Vista and DXbase. For
instance, I just discovered that my AL9A.mdb file in C:\Program
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006 is not the data base file being used
under Vista! The actual DXbase mdb file being used has been placed by Vista
in

C:\Users\AL9A\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Scientific
Solutions\DXbase 2006

The AppData folder in the path is a hidden file, so you have to tell Vista
to show hidden files otherwise you can't find the complete path. Vista uses
the VirtualStore path to keep files that are updated by installed programs -
as a security ploy to protect them from hackers I think.

Anyway, I happened upon this discovery by accident as I was using the
Dxbutility/File Backup. I noticed that the path for files to be copied to a
backup folder was C:\Program Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006 as it
has always been. Yet, after doing the backup the date of the mdb file in
DXbase 2006 was earlier than the date on the mdb file in the backup folder!
Where did this later date mdb file come from?

Some checking soon revealed that the mdb file being updated under Vista was
the one being stored in the VirtualStore path. The mdb file in C:\Program
Files\Scientific Solutions\DXbase 2006 is now a static, non-updating file
under Vista. The interesting thing is that the path specified in the File
Backup utility is NOT the path that Vista uses in doing the backup! Somehow
it knows to use the mdb file in the VirtualStore path that is actually being
changed with updated info. This is a bit disconcerting as Vista does its
own thing, regardless of what you've told it to do by specifying a path!

Many thanks to Jack and members of the DXbase reflector for answering my
request for help in getting DXbase to connect to the internet. My lack of
knowledge of computers etc makes me a little challenged following directions

but I stumbled through the procedures and am now connecting to the internet.

it is now working great.
Am looking forward to DXbase 2008 when it comes out. Jack and all the
reflector members are most appreciated for the help. Thanks again.
