Not sure but I think split windows and the ability to undock them from 
the main idea frame (like the old VB and Delphi interfaces) is being 
looked at.

As for alternatives to tabs

How about remove tabs as an option, have a new slide-out pane listing 
all open edit files. Use this to arrange the order and say if it gets to 
be shown in a tab or not, Allow any edit file to be selected from here, 
allow files to be assigned single key actions to be accessed, maybe even 
have something like the emacs buffer switch (enhanced version) where a 
hot key produces a command line' and you simply start to type the name 
of the file to narrow and hit enter when the highlighted one is correct.

Also have current behavior as an option for those that do like it


Needs some thought - maybe in future versions where the undock facility 
is implemented would make more sense than in the current version ?
