Actions speak louder than words. This principle is seen in Jesus' life. In Matthew 9, a paralytic was brought to Him. Jesus' response? "Your sins are forgiven." When the religious leaders objected, He raised the question of the hour: "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?" (v.5). The answer is obvious. To say He had forgiven the man's sins was simple, because it couldn't be proven or disproven. But, to say "Arise and walk" was different. It was instantly verifiable. So, to prove His authority to forgive sins, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house" (v.6). And he did! Jesus' actions supported His words, and so should ours. John wrote, "My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth" (1 John 3:18). What we say is significant to a watching world only if it's consistent with what we do. As we tell people about Christ's love, those words will communicate powerfully if surrounded by acts of love and kindness. Kamis, 7 Juni PERBUATAN LEBIH LANTANG Anak-anakku, marilah kita mengasihi bukan dengan perkataan atau dengan lidah, tetapi dengan perbuatan dan dalam kebenaran (1Yoh. 3:18) Bacaan: Mat. 9:1-8 Setahun: 2Taw. 28-29; Yoh. 17 Seorang komentator televisi yang sebal pada atlet muda yang kurang berprestasi tetapi suka menyombongkan kemampuannya berkata, "Jangan ceritakan apa yang akan Anda lakukan-ceritakan apa yang telah Anda lakukan!" Perbuatan bersuara lebih keras daripada perkataan. Prinsip ini tampak pada hidup Yesus. Di Matius 9, seorang lumpuh dibawa kepada-Nya. Respons Yesus? "Dosa-dosamu sudah diampuni." Saat para pemimpin agama keberatan, Yesus bertanya, "Manakah lebih mudah, mengatakan: Dosa-dosamu sudah diampuni, atau mengatakan: Bangunlah dan berjalanlah?" (ay. 5). Jawabannya jelas. Mudah bagi-Nya mengatakan Dia telah mengampuni dosa si lumpuh, karena hal itu tidak dapat dibuktikan atau disangkal. Namun, mengatakan "Bangunlah dan berjalanlah" itu berbeda. Perkataan ini dapat segera diuji kebenarannya. Maka, untuk membuktikan kuasa-Nya dalam mengampuni dosa, Yesus berkata kepada si lumpuh, "Bangunlah, angkatlah tempat tidurmu dan pulanglah ke rumahmu!" (ay. 6). Dan, demikianlah yang terjadi! Tindakan Yesus mendukung perkataan-Nya, dan kita pun seharusnya begitu. Yohanes menulis, "Anak-anakku, marilah kita mengasihi bukan dengan perkataan atau dengan lidah, tetapi dengan perbuatan dan dalam kebenaran" (1Yoh. 3:18). Perkataan kita penting bagi dunia yang mengamati kita, hanya jika perkataan itu sesuai dengan perbuatan kita. Tatkala kita berbicara tentang kasih Allah, perkataan itu akan penuh kuasa jika didukung dengan tindakan kasih dan kebaikan.
