How about using virtualization? It's a well developed technology running on nearly any hardware of nowadays. With choices as Virtualbox/Xen/KVM/QEMU, and then the non-free(but without cost, still) Vmware Server - there is something for everybody, I guess At least here, you can get old machines with PIII/1000 MHZ/512 MB RAM for 40 Euros - doesn't sound too expensive when it comes to a business-critical service - while deploying alpha and beta stuff on production systems sounds quite risky... I've been just wondering when I read this and couldn't stop me from saying this...
