How about using virtualization? It's a well developed technology
running on nearly any hardware of nowadays.
With choices as Virtualbox/Xen/KVM/QEMU, and then the non-free(but
without cost, still) Vmware Server - there is something for everybody,
I guess

At least here, you can get old machines with PIII/1000 MHZ/512 MB RAM
for 40 Euros - doesn't sound too expensive when it comes to a
business-critical service - while deploying alpha and beta stuff on
production systems sounds quite risky...
well I had to (not HAD TO but saw no other choice at the time) to use
the existing alpha version precisely because on this site there are no
spare pc's and I certainly will not be able to persuade management of a
5-6 user office to buy extra hardware just to test something.

I was in other words prepared for this to go wrong and am now busy
downloading iso of ebox to later install fresh and then recreate users
and their files. Not an overwhelming job given the size of the office...
