To Shawn Boeser and Ecofem subscribers:
Thank you!
Al, bless your heart for whatever you are willing to do to
advance the cause of women in this day and age. I do however, understand
Ms. Boeser's reservations. I am a black woman and all my life many white
people who would be my friend have made a point of stating that they are
not racist. It is those people that I distrust the most because what
they are telling me is that they have not even realized how we are all
racist--myself most definitely included! And those that don't even
realize how they are a part of the problem are the most dangerous to me.
It is only by truly admitting the ways in which we personally
support a flawed system that we can begin to change our behavior.
Trying to avoid responsibility (and blame??) for the role you play in our
society is not going to do us a lick of good. It is only when we are no
longer afraid to accept that responsibility, willing to do something about
it, that things are going to get better.
If you are truly an ally than you should recognize (and not try to
run from the fact) that much of this problem is *your fault* just like it's
mine for remaining silent for so long.
Sincerely,
Monte' Snellenberger
