Just to clarify some things, I did not offer the comment below. Sure, I
know that for the most part I'd make a miserable Moslem woman in some
Moslem cultures, but just because someone might surpress my usual way of
communicating etc., doesn't mean I dismiss him or her. Nor does it mean I
sanction violence. Fanatics--of all persuasions & countries--do not "die"
when one or more is killed; their blood waters others--their deaths end up
sparking new violence. I see that prompts more cycles, seemingly endless,
of violence: retaliation, recovery, retaliation again.
Some suggestions:
I do believe the world court can come together quickly and sanction
international violence. I do believe it's possible to VERY selectively
dismantle the means of production for nerve gas, etc. (although it's
arguable that other dangerous sites exist--the nuclear weapons/waste in
parts of the former Soviet Union where poverty & disorganization makes
them more vulnerable).
I do believe we can stop production of some of those weapons here at home
and we can work, quickly, on stopping shipment of the means (facilties,
raw materials, etc.) to make such weapons.
I believe reaching with positive aid to countries we believe harbor
terrorists, helping the people there to "fish" for themselves can help
more than anything.
Many folks view what happened at Ruby Ridge with horror, wishing that a
child and a mother didn't die. Perhaps other countries view our bombing
of their territory in a similar light. What is gained there? Bin Laden
is a sympton, in addition to being a person. Why and how he came into
existence is complex (yes, we helped him, to some degree) and that should
be addressed. Hundreds of other bin Ladens will spring up unless the why
of how they got to where they were, the poor "soil" which permits their
violence to take root (no, it's not just religion) is dealt with.
