We do not live in a perfect world, or one that allows us every choice
we should wish. Polluters must submit to effluent and emission
CONTROLS to keep our planet from being poisoned beyond
habitation. Resource harvesters must submit to CONTROLS so they
do not deplete our renewable resources beyond recovery. Humans
must CONTROL our own population, or we shall have to allow
starvation, war and disease do it for us. Living, AS WE DO, in a
world of limited area and resources, but possessing, AS WE DO, an
unlimited ability to procreate, the only alternative to BIRTH
CONTROL is DEATH CONTROL, and that is not a morally or
ethically palatable option. ONE person's rights end where OTHERS'
rights begin, RIGHTS correlate with RESPONSIBILITIES, and the
right to reproduce must be balanced by the responsibility not to do
so at a rate that causes ALL to suffer. And yes, those who remain
willfully ignorant of this responsibility, or who, knowing full well of
these necessities under which we all must labor, continue their
irresponsible multiplication, may indeed have to have their antisocial
and antiecological excesses CONTROLLED, for the good of all of
the rest of us and this too-small world we share. Blindly chanting the
mantra of personal freedom in this matter will simply push ALL OF
US, responsible and irresponsible alike, lemminglike over the cliff of
catastrophe and hurl us all to a shared destruction. Joe
