Life as a feral cat in Taiwan is rough. I've been keeping an eye on the
ones in my neighborhood. They are most definitely leery of people. One
female has produced 3-5 kittens every 6 months, but at most one kitten
in each litter has survived more than a month past weaning: starvation
or hit by cars or drowned in sewers. This particular female is about
3-years-old now. Since I've not seen her for a month or two, she may
have died. The life-span is really short. These cats (the female and
her offspring) spend most of their time rooting through the neighbor's
garbage, but do hunt small mammals, birds, and lizards. They may even
eat a spider or two. For about one year, the top predator in the
neighborhood was a free-ranging domestic female. Even though her food
dish was always full, I saw her 1-3 times a week with a bird or small
mammal.
