Although it may not be the best answer to Fabrice's question, a camera with GPS geologging could help. Nikon is releasing the Coolpix P6000 in September and I have seen mentions of other such cameras, such as the Ricoh 5000SE, but have no experience with them. There is also a device that fits on the hotshoe of some existing cameras that adds georeferences to the EXIM data.

So one could write down the measurements and photograph the data in a georeferenced image. A bit awkward, but since you could include a photo of the trees it might be a handy solution.

Hi All,

A quick question, does anyone know of a good field GPS which permits you to easily enter field data associated with a GPS point? For example, we're interested in spatial arrangement of trees at the pasture level and thus will be conducting a census of trees including their GPS coordinates, DBH, crown measurements and a couple of other measures. I was wondering if there was a machine with good positional accuracy (<4 m) and that capability.
