This reminds me of someting I heard from a scallop biologist, who loved to ask her students where the Sea Scallop Placopecten magellanicus got its name. After all, what did Magellan have to do with the North Atlantic? Apparently some samples were mislabelled and it was identified as coming from the Strait of Magellan.

While I have no idea whether this story is true, it does emphasize the importance of knowing where your samples come from!
