Hi carol,

Thanks for sharing that post on your friend's passive solar home in the Blue
Ridge mountains.

That's just what I hope to do...the fact that it is working so well is music
to my ears.

<<The sloped wall of south-facing windows warmed a
huge block of poured concrete that was about 30 inches by 30 inches by the
width of the wall of windows. >> I plan to incorporate a 16*16 sun room with
two or three operable skylights in roof . I'm planning on having concrete
slab to store thermal gains...am not sure whether I need 4" or 6" slab?

I also need to somehow get a rough estimate of how much heat it will supply.
I'm in zone 6? Time Warner zip code base says Zone 7 ...great by me. Heating
degree days is about 4300. Winters are relatively short and fairly mild but
there are periods of snow and cold weather with intermittent warm spells.
Tough on non-native, tender vegetation and plants whose time clocks are
fooled.(BG)

Glare...ah yes that too is a major concern that is often given too little
thought ...till it's too late.

But I'm not sure how you factor and design for reduced glare yet have good
daylighting too.

Love to hear more of the details on your friend's home. Do they have E_mail?

By learning from others we can reduce costly errors and omissions. he he.

Thanks again for sharin' Frank
