We have a number of new subscribers to ecopath who
probably are wondering what it is all about. First,
it is unmoderated and the content is left up to those
who decide to post messages. My view of this list
is as follows:
An ecopath isn't a "thing" it is a "process" of moving
towards sustainable living. If we try to define
sustainability precisely, several undesirable things
happen. Our tolerance for many (useful but different)
paths is decreased. Also, it is easy to be judgmental.
We can say some people are more sustainable and they
can set themselves up as the ideal and look down on
others. Another problem is that we tend to define
good/bad states and rigid rules which put us in a
box and create stifling communities.
With an ecopath it is the process of that we
all share and each of us will have a different starting point
for creating a path. The process consists of education,
matching actions to beliefs, and awareness of how
a path is built.
Some quotes which support "process" style thinking are:
You must be the change you want to see in the world.
-- Mahatma Gandhi
The means do not justify the end result.
The means become part of the end result.
So... in a sustainable culture the "process" is ongoing
and it is the process that creates sustainability. It
isn't laws or rules. Knowledge helps but without action
it is useless. What creates the path is stepping in an
educated way(action). Only the steps are real and this list
is about exploring the path and how process works.
