Title: RE: TP not allowing VAN interconnects?

Sir,
In a previous lifetime I worked for a company with a VAN (Harbinger) although that company shall remain nameless.  We had lots of experience with 500-lb gorillas, as some of them (WalMart) which again shall remain nameless, refused to let their TP's use 3rd party VANs...they wanted everyone to do direct dial-ins (bisync of course...that marvelous standard from the 80's).  We did have numerous companies sign up with the Harbinger VAN to do their sends & receives from WalMart, and that worked in the past and is working today.  This is all transparent to Walmart of course, as they don't want that to happen, for whatever reason.

So, there are ways to go around gorillas...you just don't want to get caught.  Now of course, I've blown it for everybody who does their EDI that way...except I believe that all of the VANs will do this service, and it is always transparent to the receiver exactly where the sender is sending from, so maybe the gorilla won't care in this instance.

Bottom line, I'm a believer in freedom...if somebody doesn't want to go to the expense of a bisync connection just for one TP, they should have the option of using any VAN they want.  As long as their EDI reaches the intended recipient, in timely fashion, and as correct EDI, who cares what twisted route it took to get there.

However, I can feel my WalMart credit card being revoked as I type.  It's never fun to mess with gorillas.

Subject:        TP not allowing VAN interconnects?

We have a trading partner that will not allow their VAN to do an
interconnect to our VAN. The only reason they state is that it
would cost them money. We have repeatedly and clearly said
that we would be happy to reimburse them for the $25 charge.
They just say they can not do it - lump it. Typical 800 lb gorilla
attitude.

This seems like a bad business decision on their part. Do
any of you know any good reason(s) they would choose this
policy?

In the mean time we have established a mailbox with their VAN,
Advantis. So it cost's us more than the interconnect would.
If the trading partner was not a needed book distributor for us
I would heartily recommend we drop them. I personally think
they are some combination of stupid, short sighted, and arrogant.
I am more than willing to be enlightened and retract my judgements.

Thank you,
Jack
