I do both direct connects, van interconnects and share same van. I concur
with dale. The interconnects allow me the flexibility and less complexity
to the data exchange process. Separate from the direct connects which you
can't avoid, the single van connect with interconnects to other vans
provides me with less administrative headaches and the flexibility to easily
connect with any of my tp's that are doing the same.

Are they a direct connect type of tp or do they use a van? Like you
originally said, if you are going to absorb the interconnect then what is
the big deal with them (unless they don't use van services) to me even
though there are nominal costs for it, it sure provides flexibility.

Like you said, I too don't understand what's the big deal? There must be
something else they are not telling you?

We have two trading partners that manage their own VAN. One
is a bank and
the other is a large retailer with the initials WM. One of
them also only
supports Bysnc communications so we have had to directly
connect with them
to do exchanges. I think in the EDI world you need to expect
to be able to
                do it all.

Subject: TP not allowing VAN interconnects?

We have a trading partner that will not allow their VAN to
do an
interconnect to our VAN. The only reason they state is that
it
would cost them money. We have repeatedly and clearly said
that we would be happy to reimburse them for the $25 charge.
They just say they can not do it - lump it. Typical 800 lb
gorilla
                attitude.

This seems like a bad business decision on their part. Do
any of you know any good reason(s) they would choose this
                policy?

In the mean time we have established a mailbox with their
VAN,
Advantis. So it cost's us more than the interconnect would.
If the trading partner was not a needed book distributor for
us
I would heartily recommend we drop them. I personally think
they are some combination of stupid, short sighted, and
arrogant.
I am more than willing to be enlightened and retract my
judgements.

                Thank you,
                Jack
