There are only a couple reasons for them to do this.  One is to force you to pay their network.  They, the gorilla, might have a contract with them that has a clause that provides them with a greater discount for each additional trading partner that signs up. 

Interconnects work very well with most VAN's.  Although I have a number of clients that have had problems with that network and interconnects.  So there may be a valid reason, unfortunatly the reason is caused by the specific network, not the interconnect process.
