In an effort to be absolutl sure that the VAN got the entire interchange before the phone went dead, the ISA14 was born. The VAN would create a TA, a Transaction Acknowledgement, indicating that they got the entire ISA. In these days of emails and 100MB direct connects, it seems rather quaint, but since some people are still using Morse Code for EDI (just a joke) it is still there, and likely will be during the Y10K cirsis in about 8 thousand years.
